What is Leading Lights/ Lines/Ranges?

A group of two or more marks or lights, in the same vertical plane such that the navigator can follow the leading line on the same bearing.

Leading Line structures can be any colour or shape that provides a distinctive mark that cannot be confused with adjacent structures.

Description for  leading lights
  • No colour significance. Competent authority determines the optimum colours to contrast with the dominant background colour at the location.
  • No shape significance.
  • Rectangular or triangular figures are recommended.
  • Any, however fixed characteristics should be used sparingly and the use of synchronisation can assist in the overcoming
  • background light.
