Cargo ventilation:
- Ventilation to the holds may be:
- Mechanical or forced draft ventilation – where fans which can normally run in both directions are provided
- Natural ventilation – where ventilation results from the natural movement of air caused by the wind blowing, the ship’s motion, or the circulation of air resulting from temperature differences.
Purpose of ventilation :
Bulk cargoes are ventilated:
- To prevent the formation of cargo sweat or ship’s sweat which could damage the cargo such as for grain and steel
- To reduce the harmful heating of the cargo such as for grain and coal
- To remove hazardous gases such as for coal
- To remove moist air and replace it with drier air to discourage the formation of sweat
