- Every oil tanker of 150 gross tons above must be provided with one.
- The oil record book must be completed when:
- Ballasting and cleaning of oil fuel tanks
- Discharge of dirty ballast or cleaning water from tanks
- Disposal of oily residues
- Discharge overboard of bilge water
- Loading/unloading of oil cargo
- Internal transfer of oil during voyage
- Ballasting of cargo tanks and dedicated clean ballast tanks
- Cleaning of cargo oil tanks
- Discharge of ballast
- Disposal of residues
- The oil record book is to be kept in a place readily available for inspection at any time.
