What are regulations for control of Steering Gear System ?

The control of the main steering gear shall be provided on the navigating bridge and in the steering great compartment. Two independent control systems operable from the navigating bridge shall be provided for a steering gear arranged as required.

The Chief Surveyor with the Government of India may permit a single hydraulic telemeter control system on any ship other than a tanker, chemical tanker or gas carrier of 10,000 tons or above. The steering wheel or steering lever need not be duplicated.

The control of the auxiliary steering gear shall be provided in the steering gear compartment and, if such gear is power operated from the navigating bridge. An auxiliary steering gear control system provided the navigating bridge shall be independent of the control system for the main steering gear.
