- Be aware of small vessels, especially speed boats , should be treated with suspicion.
- Maintain a wide berth from large vessels, especially LNG and oil tankers.
- Navigate as far away from land as is practical.
- Check the regular status reports of piracy and armed robbery attack via routine broadcast on INMARSAT C, through Safety Net service and Fleet Broadcast.
In Port or at Anchor:
- Where possible, avoid remaining in achorages, either steam or drift (with engines on standby) 20-40 nm off-shore at night, only returning within VHF range at intervals for orders/news regarding berthing instructions. If possible to attempt to arrive in port during daylight hrs or scheduled arrival for berthng on arrival.
- Full lighting should be provided on deck and overside.
- Exhibit clean signs of alertness by switching on/off deck lights, sweeping surrounding waters with searchlights periodically, testing water hoses, etc.
- Ensure wires or ropes do not hand over side unnecessary.
- Prohibit trading between crew and locals on board ship.
- Efficient Gangway watch & maintain a strict record of visitors in Visitor’s Log.
- All cabins locked
- Public spaces such as wheelhouse and radio rooms should be locked.
- Pilferable items in the mess rooms, smoke rooms and common offices should be secured as far as possible in locked cabinets or lockers.
