What is Swell?

It is the name given to waves, on the sea-surface, formed by wind that has subsequently stopped blowing or is blowing at some other place quite far away. Swell travels quickly and has been known to have been felt over 1000 miles away. Swell travels radially outwards from the centre of a storm an is usually the first indication of the presence and bearing (direction) of a TRS.
