What is Righting Lever? What is Curve of Statical Stability (GZ Curve) ?

Righting lever (GZ) is defined as the horizontal distance, measured in metres, between the centre of gravity (G) and the vertical line of action of the buoyancy force (Bf) acting through the centre of buoyancy (B1) when the ship is heeled.

Righting lever (GZ) increases to some maximum value and then decreases as the ship progressively heels further.

The righting levers for specified angles of heel are represented on a Curve of Statical Stability, commonly known as a GZ Curve as shown.

  • Q: If i have say, 4 containers boxes, that weight the same. How does it affect GZ and ship stability considering two options: One- If I put them on the center line – in a vertical position under G- adjacent to one another OR two- 2 of each attached to the side walls (port and starboard) in the same section of the ship as in option 1 ?
    THANKS.
