What is polar code?

Deals with guidelines for the voyages into Polar Regions and include, among other aspects, the following:
  • Suitability of charts,
  • Methods and equipments for position fixing as well as for direction determination
  • Problems related to ice presence in polar regions,
  • Past voyage histories / experiences to be considered as guidelines
  • Area may not be well surveyed, refer to coast pilots, sailing directions
  • Recommends polar voyages only during summer season for that pole
  • For arctic regions, there are special ice plotting sheets and charts
  • Mfrage effect very prominent
  • Unknown tides / currents (due scanty surveys) make DRs of vessel very unreliable.
