What is MARPOL and Why it is called as MARPOL 73/78?

“The International convention for the prevention of pollution from ships” widely known as the MARPOL convention was adopted in 1973. The convention was subsequently modified by the protocol of 1978 and that’s why known as the ‘International convention for the prevention of pollution of from ship, 1973, as modified by the protocol of 1978 relating thereto or in short from MARPOL 73/78 .

ANNEX 1-  Regulation for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil (entered into force on 2nd Oct 1983)

ANNEX 2-  Regulation for the control of pollution by noxious liquid substances in bulk 6 April 1987.

ANNEX 3-  Regulation for the prevention of pollution by Harmful substances carried by sea in packaged form (entered into force on 1st July 1992).

ANNEX 4-  Regulations for the prevention of pollution by sewage from ships (entered into force on 27th September 2003)

ANNEX 5-  Regulations for the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships (entered into force on 31st Dec 1988)

ANNEX 6-  Regulations for the prevention of Air pollution from ships (entered into force on 19th May 2005)
