What is difference between Grain capacity and Bale capacity ?

Bale capacity :

This is a cubic capacity of a space where :

  • breadth taken from inside the cargo battens
  • depth from wooden ceiling to the inside of the deck
  • length from inside the bulkhead stiffeners or sparring if fitted

Bale Capacity is used when measuring space for general cargo as solid cargo can only be stowed up to the limit of the frames & beams.

Grain capacity

This is a cubic capacity of a space where :

  • all measurements are taken right to the plating
  • al allowance is made for volume occupied by frames and beams

This space is not only associated with the carriage of grain, but with any form of bulk cargo which would stow similarly – completely filling the space.
